Viacheslav Chornovil (1937–1999) was a towering Ukrainian dissident, journalist, and politician whose principled defiance of Soviet authoritarianism made him one of the moral leaders of Ukraine's independence movement. A courageous journalist who documented and protested the persecution of Ukrainian intellectuals, he was repeatedly imprisoned by the Soviet regime, spending years in labor camps and internal exile for the crime of insisting that Ukraine and its culture deserved to exist freely.
Uncompromising in his commitment to Ukrainian democracy and national identity, Chornovil emerged from Soviet repression to become a founding figure of independent Ukraine's political life, leading the People's Movement of Ukraine (Rukh).
